Chapter 7. SSL VPN
The router provides an intrinsic SSL VPN feature as an alternate to the s tandard IPsec
VPN. SSL VPN differs from IPs ec VPN mainly by removing the requirement of a pre -
ins talled VPN client on the remote host. Ins tead, users can s ecurely login through the
SSL Us er Portal us ing a s tandard web browser and receive acces s to configured
network res ources within the corporate LAN. The router s upports multiple concurrent
ses s ions to allow remote us ers to acces s the LAN over an encrypted link through a
cus tomizable us er portal interface, and each SSL VPN us er can be as s igned unique
privileges and network res ource acces s levels .
The remote us er can be provided different options for SSL s ervice through this router:
VPN Tunnel: Th e remo t e u s ers SSL en ab led b ro ws er is u s ed in p lace o f a VPN
client on the remote hos t to es tablish a s ecure VPN tunnel. A SSL VPN client
(Active-X or Java bas ed) is ins talled in the remote hos t to allow the client to join
the corporate LAN with p re-configured acces s /policy privileges . At this point a
v irt u a l netwo rk in t erfac e is created on the users hos t and this will be as s igned an
IP addres s and DNS s erver addres s from the router. Once es tablished, the hos t
machine can acces s allocated network res ources .
Port Forwarding: A web-bas ed (ActiveX or Java) client is ins talled on the client
machine again. Note that Port Forwarding service only s upports TCP connections
between the remote us er and the router. The router adminis trator can define s pecific
services or applications that are available to remote port forwarding us ers ins tead
of acces s to the full LAN like the VPN tunnel.
ActiveX clients are us ed when the remote user accesses the portal us ing the Internet
Explorer brows er. The Java client is u s ed for other brows ers like Mozilla Firefox,
Nets cape Navigator, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari.
